Entertainment - The Scissor Sisters in Singapore: An explosive concert despite "Bali Belly" delay

Jan 12, 2012

The audience had been waiting for a long time, before American pop-disco band the Scissor Sisters came on stage for their gig at the Fort Canning Park on Monday.

The throngs of concert-goers – some even clad in elaborate costumes and party hats - had become bored and behaved like a mob of restless zombies, shambling around the field, while the stage remained decidedly empty some 90 minutes after showtime.

But the atmosphere changed completely when the Scissor Sisters finally took to the stage, and all was forgiven after they revealed the reason behind the late start – a nasty stomach upset that the quintet termed "Bali Belly".

"We just came from Bali and were puking our brains out before we got on stage. You might see some of it tonight," said the band's lead female vocalist Matronic with a laugh.

If they were feeling ill, it certainly didn't show during the performance.

The band transformed the venue into a discotheque with their unique brand of music and got the appreciative crowd bobbing their heads along with the band's infectious beats.

The Scissor Sisters, comprised of lead singers Jake Shears and Ana Matronic with Babydaddy, Del Marquis and Randy Real on the instruments, were simply brilliant showmen who knew how to show their audiences a good time.

Fans jumped and pumped their fists to the band's hits like "Laura", "Take Your Mama" and the perennial crowd-pleaser "Filthy/Gorgeous".

"Now who's feeling filthy tonight? Put your hands up if you are feeling filthyyyyy!" said Matronic as the crowd roared with approval, and blotted out the stage with their raised arms.

The concert felt more like a big outdoor party with friends than an actual concert

Matronic went on to dedicate a song to a young shrieking fan, before she and the rest of the fans were treated to a look at Shears' perfectly-toned body, when he stripped off his shirt after a little striptease.

But it was the band's biggest hit "I Don't Feel Like Dancin" which got concert-goers really excited as the concert sped toward its conclusion.

Soon after, it was over.

"You guys are amazing. Thank you so much!

"If you guys sucked, I probably wouldn't be bothered [coming on stage again for the encore]," said Shears after their final song.

"We are the Scissor Sisters and so are you!" Matronic shouted, drawing enthusiastic screams from the exhausted but satisfied audience.
